Matt Barwick’s Film “Loggerhead” | Creative Mix Founding Artist News
It’s a new year and we hope to check in with all our founding artists and give a little update about any creative pursuits they have emersed themselves in since we introduced them at our launch late 2020.
Originally in his Bio for The Creative Mix, Matt Barwick outlined his love of sharing stories and using his skills across both photography and film to do this authentically and artistically.
This still holds true and we thought we would share one of his film projects from 2021.
The film, titled Loggerhead, documents the inspiring efforts of a small village in Northern NSW, where community and various organisations come together to do everything possible to help a vunerable species when an endangered female loggerhead turtle has laid her eggs too late in the season for them to be viable. They stand no chance of surviving the rapidly cooling sand temperatures so with ingenuity, cooperation and belief, and the blessings of indigenous elders, the village sets out to make a difference.
Local conservation group Green Heroes commissioned the film to document this amazing community story, doing their part to combat the very real results of climate change and it's effect on sea turtles. A true collaborative effort between numerous organisations, individuals and volunteers.
To coincide with Green Heroes 5th anniversary, a fundraising benefit night was held at Farm & Co in Cudgen, with live music, entertainment, food, drinks, giveaways and auctions, tickets sold out very quickly. Under a perfectly clear Winters night, Loggerhead premiered exclusively on the big screen to over 100 people. As you can see from the images it was a beautiful event.
Just this month the film has also been selected as a finalist for the Byron All Shorts/IQ/flickerfest festival.
